Mariella “Mary” Calvey Port

Mariella “Mary” Calvey Port of Clarks Summit died Thursday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center after being struck by a motor vehicle in South Abington Twp. She was the widow of Jerry T. Port, the Golf Professional at Glen Oak Country Club for over 20 years, who died in 1983.

Mary was born Nov. 11, 1946 in Scranton. She was the daughter of the late John Jennings and Kathryne (Dailey) Calvey. She graduated from Our Lady of Peace School, Marywood Seminary and Marywood University, receiving her B.A. in Education. She also completed her course requirements for Reading Specialist Certification at Marywood.

Mary began as an elementary school teacher for the Susquehanna Area School District. While married to Jerry, she managed the Glen Oak Country Club Pro Shop. She was later a Chemical Dependency Specialist at Marworth Treatment Center, Waverly and then a Case Manager for Lackawanna County Drug and Alcohol.

After moving to Fort Myers, Florida, where she lived for 15 years, Mary returned to Clarks Summit in 2021. She was a Reading Specialist in Ft. Myers School District and then became an Addiction Recovery Specialist for Lee County, Florida, serving the prison system.

Mary loved visiting her son, Jason, his wife, Sara, and her treasured grandson, Liam. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Snows, Clarks Summit, serving the parish as a Minister of Communion to the homebound and a visitor of the sick. She was a past president of the Marywood Seminary Alumnae Association and a volunteer at the Friends of the Poor, Scranton.

An avid golfer, Mary enjoyed her golf leagues and was also active at the Hillside Healthy Aging Campus, South Abington Twp., where she participated in exercise classes, bridge and Mahjong.

Mary was loved and appreciated over the years for her kindness, empathy, straightforwardness, and service to others. She lived her program in recovery and always extended a helping hand to those in need.

Surviving; son, Atty. Jason J. Port and wife Sara, Shrewsbury, Mass.; grandson, Liam, at home; sister, Kathleen McLaine (Paul), Easton; brothers, Francis R. Calvey (JoAnn), Whitney Point, N.Y., Joseph B. Calvey (Linda), Binghamton, N.Y., Christopher C. Calvey (Sharon), Clarks Summit; an uncle, Patrick A. Calvey, Clarks Green; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Br. John Patrick Calvey T.O.R., Franciscan; two stepsons, Jerry T. Port II and FORCM Jon Port, USN; and a nephew, Matthew Calvey.

The funeral will be Tuesday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows, 301 South State Street, Clarks Summit, to be celebrated by Msgr. Joseph G. Quinn, pastor, concelebrants Fr. Richard L. Davis, T.O.R., and Fr. David Bonarrigo, both of St. Francis Friary, Mt. Assisi, Loretto. Private interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Avenue, Clarks Summit.

Virginia Collins Burns

Formerly of the North Side and Baldwin and currently of Bethel Park, died peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2023, with her children by her side.  

She was born December 16, 1933, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of William and Cecelia (Connelly) Collins.  

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Thomas who died on March 6, 1996. She is survived by her children: Margaret C. (Peggy) Burns (Louise M. Dufresne), William G. Burns and his spouse Linda (Pasquarelli) Burns, and Michael S. Burns and his spouse Darcie (Hunter) Burns; five grandchildren, Lisa (Corey) Keller, Jennifer (Cory) Nolte, Jeffrey (Erin) Burns, Matthew Burns, and Allison (Kody) Richards; and her great-grandchildren, which she referred to as her “babies,” Kenny, Reese, Mila, Ava, Olivia, and Eli.  She is the sister of Barbara Michener of Bethel Park and the late Margaret (Louis) McLinden.  She is the sister-in-law of Patricia (late John) Bogniak, and the late, Charles Burns, James Burns, Rev. John Burns, CSSp., Philip Burns, Agnes Maloney, Bernard Burns, Mary Burns, Regis Burns, Robert Burns, Catherine Burns, Sr. Therese Burns SC, and Sr. Mary Michael Burns SC.  She is also survived by and preceded in death by many loving cousins and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. 

Virginia worked at Mellon Bank for many years, retiring as an Assistant Vice President in the Trust Department.  She was a member of the MVP’s (Mellon Volunteer Professionals), for many years.  She especially loved her time volunteering at Heinz Hall where she and the late Marvin Hamlisch were on a first-name basis, although he called her “Ginny,” a name she did not like.   

Virginia also established one of the first folk masses at Nativity Church in South Park in the 1970’s creating an environment that welcomed high school-age parishioners back to the church.        

The main focus of her life, however, was her family: the numerous holiday gatherings, beach vacations, the Women’s Weekend at Deep Creek, and Sunday dinners were her favorite. Events that her family will cherish forever.

George A. Strish, Jr.

George A. Strish, Jr, 81, a life time resident of Ashley, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

The eldest child of the late George A. Sr. and Anna M (Kraynak) Strish, was born in Kingston, PA on December 27, 1941.

George was a member of the graduating class of 1959 of St. Leo’s High School, Ashley, and also a member of the St. Leo’s 1958 State Champion Basketball Team.

He went on to pursue his lifelong ambition of following in his parents’ footsteps and became a licensed funeral director in 1963 graduating from Eckel’s College of Mortuary Science, Philadelphia, and was affiliated with his parents in the family business. He was a Funeral Director for over 60 years. He also attained his BA Degree in Sociology from King’s College in 1972. He served in the US Army Reserves from June 1967 to March 1972. Together with his sister, Deborah, and sons, George III and Eric, they continued the George A. Strish, Inc. Funeral Home legacy. George was devoted to his profession and dedicated his life to helping people in their time of need.

His parents raised him to be the best son, husband, father, brother and gentleman. He surpassed all their expectations. George was a soft spoken person, with a gentle soul and a generous heart. He often used his sharp sense of humor to make the people around him laugh.

He was a member of St. Leo the Great Parish, Ashley where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and participated in many of the church’s activities.

He was also a member of the Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association, where he served as President from 2005 – 2010, a member of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, a former member of the Ashley Lion’s Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, St. Dymphana Council #12814, Sugar Notch where he served as Secretary.

He was a member of the National Slovak Society and named Fraternalist of the Year in 2006. He was an Antique Car collector and enthusiast. George was a gifted vocalist and in his younger years sang at many weddings of friends, funerals and events. He will long be remembered for his kind and loving ways and devotion to his profession.

Preceding him in death were his beloved wife of 51 years, Rose Mary (Krupa) Strish, 2020, brothers, Robert J. Strish, 1956 and Norman J. Strish, in 2007.

Surviving are sons, George A. Strish, III and his wife, Carlee, Mountain Top, Kenneth J. Strish and his wife, Ellen Brennan, Berwick, and Eric R. Strish, and his wife, Amanda, Mountain Top,

8 grandchildren, Maria Rose, George IV, Anthony, Donato, Noah, Samuel, Eric Paul and Luke Strish, sister, Deborah Strish Katra and her husband, Jeff, Hunlock Creek. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services were held last month.

George’s family wants to send their heartfelt thanks and admiration to the wonderful angels, Nancy, Vanessa and Cheryl for their kind and compassionate care they gave him over the last few years. Your time and your talent helped him through some difficult days. It will never be forgotten by us and we are forever grateful for your friendship. 


Charles William “Bill” Reigle

Charles William “Bill” Reigle, Jr., 100, of Paxtonville, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Evangelical Community Hospital.

Bill was born on November 7, 1922, in Paxtonville, a son of the late Charles William and Clara Gertrude (Hill) Reigle, Sr. On June 29, 1951, Bill married the love of his life, Mae (Naylor) Reigle, who survives. Bill and Mae shared 72 years of marriage and a lifetime of milestones and precious memories.

After graduating from high school, Bill graduated from Eckels College of Embalming and Mortuary Science School in Philadelphia where he became a licensed funeral director and later enlisted in the United States Navy.

Bill was employed by his father and alongside his brother, Bob, at their family business, C. W. Reigle & Sons Feed Mill in Paxtonville. He and Bob also operated Beavertown Poultry. They raised and dressed turkeys and were the main supplier of turkeys to The Dutch Pantry Restaurant chain. Bill was also a funeral director/supervisor at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., for many years, retiring at the age of 94.

Bill enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He especially enjoyed spending time taking car rides with Mae, and later, going for breakfast and taking car rides with their special friend, Deb, to view the local scenery.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Mae; several nieces and nephews; and Mae and Bill’s special friend, Deborah Shambach.

He is preceded in passing by his parents; son, Zane Richard Naylor; brother, Bob Reigle; and sisters, Margaret Lipscomb and Alice Conrad.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mt. Pleasant Mills, PA 17853, with Pastor Brittin Stimeling officiating.

Interment will immediately follow in Paxtonville Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Selinsgrove American Legion Post 25 and the Selinsgrove VFW Post 6631.
